I moved into this building about six months ago. There's a group chat for all the residents, which is mostly used for practical stuff: packages delivered to the wrong unit, the water being shut off for a few hours, reminders about trash day. I noticed pretty quickly that people only ever used two reactions to these messages: a heart (❤️) or a thumbs-up (👍). I figured it was just a coincidence. Yesterday, someone posted that they'd accidentally gotten their neighbor's meal kit box. A few minutes later, a newer tenant replied to that message with a laughing emoji (😂). What followed was a masterclass in passive aggression. The original poster replied, "Not sure what's funny about it?" Then the building's self-appointed moderator posted a long paragraph about 'maintaining a respectful and professional communication channel.' The laughing emoji person apologized, but now every message they send gets zero reactions. It feels like I'm watching someone get quietly shunned for a crime I didn't even know existed. Now I'm scared to react with anything at all.
