Modern sports card collecting turned a fun childhood hobby into day trading for kids.

Remembering when collecting sports cards meant riding your bike to the store and trading duplicates on the porch with friends. Now it feels completely ruined by livestream case breaks, five-hundred-dollar hobby boxes, and people obsessing over resale value instead of just loving the game.

The full story

I was organizing my garage over the weekend and stumbled on an old tub of baseball card binders from the late 90s and early 2000s. There was something genuinely magic about riding bikes down to the local card shop, dropping three dollars on a foil pack, and praying you pulled an insert card or a piece of a game-worn jersey. You smelled the cheap cardboard, traded duplicates with the neighborhood kids on someone's front porch, and actually learned the entire roster of teams you didn't even watch because you read the back of every single card while eating cereal. Fast forward to yesterday. My nephew shows me what collecting looks like now, and it’s honestly depressing. He doesn't even want physical packs; he watches 30-year-old guys on livestreams open locked $500 hobby boxes, buying fractional 'breaks' where you only get cards if a certain team is pulled. If someone actually hits a good rookie card, it doesn't go into a binder or a shoebox—it immediately gets sealed into a thick acrylic slab, graded by a third-party company with a numerical score, and listed on an auction app before the kid even touches it. It’s not a hobby anymore, it’s just day trading for middle schoolers. My brother tells me I’m just an old head yelling at clouds and that the market having real financial liquidity and authentication makes collecting objectively better and more rewarding. But I really miss when collecting was about loving the sport and trading with your friends, instead of obsessing over profit margins and gem-mint PSA 10 slabs.
