I have to write an apology note for missing a grad school study group.

By @ashmm · School

I'm in a pretty intense masters program and in a study group with three other people. I had a family thing come up and told them I couldn't make our session. Now they're saying I need to write a formal apology to the group for 'violating group norms'.

The full story

I'm 25 and in a master's program that's honestly a lot more intense than I expected. For one of our core classes, we have a semester-long group project that's a huge chunk of our grade. I'm in a group with three other students. We schedule weekly study sessions to work on it, usually on Sunday afternoons. This past weekend, a family issue came up unexpectedly on Saturday night and I had to drive a few hours to be with my parents. I texted the group chat first thing Sunday morning, letting them know I was so sorry but I wouldn't be able to make the meeting and that I'd catch up on my own time. I thought it was fine. Then last night, one of the group members sent me a long message. they said the group was 'disappointed' by my 'lack of commitment' and that my absence 'set the team back'. He then said that to ensure accountability, they've all agreed that I need to write a formal apology letter to the group and commit to not missing another session. I feel like I'm being treated like a child. I had a legitimate reason to miss it, and I gave them as much notice as I could. I don't want to start drama over this since we have to work together all semester, but writing an apology note feels humiliating.
