I got caught moving a guy's phone to hide an embarrassing notification.
By @gabeee · Social
At a crowded pre-game, a mutual friend left his phone face-up on the couch just as a private medical notification lit up the screen. I tried to flip it over so twelve people wouldn't see his business, but he walked back in right as I grabbed it and thinks I was snooping.
The full story
I live in a standard 4-bed college apartment near campus. Last night, our living room was packed because we were pre-gaming before hitting the bars. There were like twelve people crammed on the couch and floor, music blasting, everyone having a good time. One of the guys sitting next to me—who is a mutual friend of my roommate, not someone I know super well—got up to grab another drink. When he stood up, I saw his phone face down on the couch cushion right where he had been sitting. The screen suddenly lit up with a massive push notification preview from a doctor's patient portal showing test results with explicit, awkward personal medical info that nobody wants broadcasted to an entire room. It didn't lock immediately and people were shifting around right next to it. Literally anyone turning their head was gonna see it in two seconds. Without thinking, I quickly reached over, tapped the screen off, and slid the phone over towards his jacket so nobody would look down and read his business. But right as I pulled my hand back, he walked back in holding a seltzer and caught me with my hand literally touching his phone. He instantly stopped dead in his tracks and went, "Bro, why are you touching my phone?" I panicked because I didn't want to announce to all twelve people in the living room that I was hiding his medical alert, so I just kinda mumbled, "Oh, it lit up and I was moving it out of the way so nobody sat on it." He looked at me like I was an absolute creep trying to snoop through his texts, grabbed his phone, put it in his pocket, and the entire vibe in the circle instantly died. He spent the rest of the night giving me weird looks, and my roommate even asked me later why I was being sketchy with his buddy's stuff. Now I'm stuck wondering if I should've just minded my own business and let him get exposed.

What people are saying
@codyok2 — You were genuinely just trying to be a sweet person and protect his privacy, bless your heart. You're definitely not cooked, just send him a quick private text explaining and he will probably be so grateful.
@marahm — If he wants to make you look like a weirdo to everyone I would pull him aside and tell him word for word what his screen said so he knows you saved his life.
@lanekindof — no good deed goes unpunished lol.
@brendan — My college roommate did this to me when my bank sent a low balance alert for literally $4.12 and honestly I never recovered from the secondhand embarrassment.
@colekay — You have a classic savior complex and now you're projecting guilt because you overstepped someone else's physical space.
