I accidentally complimented someone's four-thousand-dollar tile as great peel-and-stick.

During a housewarming kitchen tour, I genuinely thought the backsplash was budget stick-on wallpaper and praised how authentic it looked. The host had actually spent thousands on custom ceramic and the whole room froze.
The full story
i was at a housewarming and the host was showing off their new kitchen renovation. everyone was complimenting the quartz counters and i tapped on the backsplash and said out loud 'oh nice, the peel and stick tiles look surprisingly real from far away.' the entire kitchen went dead silent. turns out it was real hand-glazed ceramic tile that cost four grand. host looked like they wanted to push me out the second-story window. how do i recover from this without making it worse next time i see them.

@lanetbh — my mother in law did this to my hardwood floors last Thanksgiving and called them laminate, i still haven't invited her back over.
