My kid is 9 and has to be in a booster seat in my friend's car because she lives in a different state. It feels like overkill and makes carpooling for school a nightmare.

We live on a state line, so half our friends (and my kids' school) are in a different state with different rules. My son is 9 and average height/weight, but their law says he needs a booster seat until he's basically a preteen. In our state, he's been out of one for years. It makes carpooling a logistical mess. I have to own extra seats just for playdates, and some parents get weirdly judgmental about it. I'm all for safety, but at some point it feels like we're just collecting gear for no real reason.
