I brought a homemade dish to a potluck and my host threw it out in front of me.

I spent all afternoon making my famous seven-layer dip for a neighborhood get-together. When I got there, the host said she doesn't allow 'outside food' for 'aesthetic reasons' and tossed it right in the trash.

I'm still just so flabbergasted by this that I have to write it down. My new neighbors, a younger couple probably in their late 20s, invited everyone on the block to a 'casual backyard hang.' It sounded lovely. In my day, that meant a potluck, so I did what any good neighbor would do: I made my signature seven-layer dip. It's a classic for a reason—everyone always loves it. I spent a good part of the afternoon getting all the layers just right. I put it in my nicest glass dish, covered it, and walked over, proud as punch. When I got there, the hostess saw my dish and her face just... dropped. She pulled me aside and said, 'Oh, that's so sweet of you, but we're doing a fully catered, curated menu. I just can't have outside food mixing with the aesthetic.' I thought she was joking. I sort of laughed and said, 'Oh, it's just a dip, I can stick it on the end of the table!' She then took the dish from my hands, walked it over to the garbage can, and scraped the entire thing into the bin. My glass dish and all. they said, 'I'm so sorry, but the presentation is very important to me,' and then handed me back my empty, sticky dish before turning back to her other guests. I was so stunned I didn't know what to do. I just stood there holding my empty dish. Is this what parties are now? You throw out a guest's contribution because it doesn't match the 'aesthetic'? What happened to just being grateful someone made the effort?
