Bringing your own tournament chess clock to a casual card game night is unhinged.
By @willa · Social
A guy at our local game shop pulls out a personal digital timer for a $15 casual draft and tries to force five-minute turn limits on everyone. Half the shop says it prevents stalling, but the rest of us think it completely ruins the vibe.
The full story
my boyfriend and i got roped into our local tabletop store's weekly draft tournament because his coworker needed a fourth to fill out a table. it's competitive casual, low stakes, cheap entry fee. everyone pays $15, you draft packs, you play three rounds, winner gets store credit. two weeks in, there's this one guy who clearly treats this basement backroom like day two of a pro tour. he literally brings a branded digital tournament chess clock out of a foam-lined pelican case, slaps it down in front of a casual nineteen-year-old college kid playing a pile of commons, and demands strict five-minute timed turn limits. his argument is that slow play is a form of cheating and if you don't enforce timers, people will just stare at their hand for six minutes doing mental math, which ruins the competitive integrity of the game. he says the store rules explicitly say 'official tournament guidelines apply,' and those guidelines technically have round timers. except nobody else does this. literally nobody. everyone else just plays cards, chats, grabs a soda, and if someone is taking forever on a complex combat math phase, you just casually tap the table or make a joke to nudge them along. last night he played against my boyfriend and tried to slap down a match loss because my boyfriend took three minutes to read a double-sided wall of text on a mythic card he'd never seen before. my boyfriend basically laughed in his face, pushed the clock away, and told him if he wants to play speed chess he should go sit in the park with the retirees. now the store discord is genuinely having a civil war over it. the hardcore competitive grinders are calling us casual tourists who disrespect other people's time, while everyone else is saying bringing a pelican-cased tournament timer to a tuesday night $15 casual draft is certifiably insane behavior.

@ashy — My brother does this exact same thing at our Thanksgiving Catan games because he claims my aunt colludes during trade phases, it takes all the fun out of the holiday.
@gusmaybe — Play faster. Skill issue.
@noahhmm — the pelican case is what really elevates this to art.
@nicoliterally — Good for your boyfriend for standing his ground with a smile, you two just wanted a fun date night and nobody needs that kind of stress over a fifteen dollar hobby game!
@guslol — bring an air horn next week and buzz him every turn
