An innocent prank on my husband has accidentally triggered a neighborhood-wide investigation.

By @owenagain · Family

I tried to play a dumb joke by replacing the cream in some Oreos with cream cheese. He didn't eat them, but our neighbor borrowed the cookies for a school bake sale, and now the entire cul-de-sac's parent group chat is trying to solve the mystery of the 'bad batch' of Oreos from the local store.

The full story

I am in so much trouble and it's for the stupidest reason imaginable. My husband loves Oreos, so as a dumb prank I was going to serve him some that I'd carefully opened and re-filled with a mix of cream cheese and mint extract. I thought it would be a funny 30-second moment. But of course he decided to start a health kick that afternoon and didn't touch them. I completely forgot about them until my neighbor frantically knocked on the door an hour later. She'd forgotten she was on snack duty for a school event and asked if I had anything she could bring, like a packet of cookies. Without thinking, I just handed her the box of doctored Oreos. The penny didn't drop until about 8pm when our neighborhood group chat lit up. 'Julie's Oreos from the bake sale tasted... weird? Did anyone else's kid say that?' Then more replies. 'Yeah my son said they tasted like minty feet.' 'I think they're contaminated! Call the store!' Before I could stop it, a whole investigation had been launched. They were comparing batch numbers, someone had already emailed the grocery store manager, and there was talk of reporting it to the company. I am in way too deep to confess now. My 'hilarious' prank is about to cause a five-alarm suburban panic. I've just been quietly deleting my 'LOL' reaction to the messages and praying this all goes away. Do I just ride this out and let them believe in the phantom bad batch of Oreos? Or do I have to come clean and admit I'm the reason a dozen 8-year-olds think Oreos taste like toothpaste?
