Unpopular opinion: the 90s weren't actually that great.

My coworkers are all obsessed with 90s nostalgia, romanticizing everything from the music to the fashion. I'm sorry, but I remember it differently and I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

I'm in my late 30s, so I was a kid/teen right through the 90s. At my office, everyone younger than me treats the decade like some kind of mythical golden age. They have '90s Throwback' playlists, talk about how much better movies were, and wear chunky sneakers and bucket hats like it's high fashion. I finally spoke up in a meeting's pre-chatter the other day. I said that I remember dial-up internet being excruciatingly slow, not having a cell phone to coordinate with friends, and a lot of the music being pretty cheesy boy bands and one-hit wonders. I mentioned that the 'fashion' was often just ill-fitting jeans and stuff we'd laugh at now if it wasn't trendy again. It was like I had insulted their religion. One coworker said I was being 'cynical' and 'missing the vibe.' Another said the 90s were a simpler time before social media ruined everything. I argued that 'simpler' also meant more isolated and that we're looking back with rose-colored glasses. Now the office feels a little awkward, and I'm the designated 'hater' of the good old days. Was I wrong to burst their bubble?
