There's a guy on my team who shares way too much about his dating life on our morning stand-up call.
By @ineslol · Work
Every day, we do a quick check-in on Zoom. This one coworker consistently gives a 5-minute rundown of his horrible dates, Hinge matches, and romantic failures before talking about work. It is excruciatingly awkward.
The full story
I am all for a friendly and open workplace, but there's a line. We have a daily 15-minute stand-up meeting on Zoom with our immediate team of about eight people, plus our manager. The goal is to quickly align on priorities. One of my coworkers, let's call him 'the bachelor,' has made it his personal podcast slot. He'll start his update with something like, "Well, not much progress on the Q3 report because I was up until 2 a.m. with a date who told me she thought astrology was a hard science, so that was a train wreck." And then he just... keeps going. We get detailed stories about who paid, awkward goodbyes, and his analysis of their texting patterns. Everyone just sits there with a pained smile, staring into their webcams. My manager is non-confrontational and just tries to steer it back to work with a nervous laugh and a "Haha, wow, sounds like a night! Okay, so about that analytics dashboard...?" But it happens every single day. It's so uncomfortable and derails the entire meeting. I feel like I know more about this man's romantic misfortunes than I know about my own friends. I've started logging into the call exactly 5 minutes late just to miss his segment. I want to say something, but is it my place? Or should my manager be the one to handle it?
