People romanticize vintage split-screen multiplayer way more than the games actually deserve.

My friend bought an old CRT setup to recreate our childhood multiplayer nights, but the terrible controls and tiny split screens made it unplayable. We miss our childhood freedom, not the clunky hardware.
The full story
My best friend spent three hours yesterday trying to set up an authentic retro gaming console and vintage CRT monitor in his apartment just so our group could recreate our middle school sleepovers. He literally paid two hundred dollars on marketplace for a heavy box television and insisted it was necessary for the genuine aesthetic. So our four-person crew gathered around, cracked open generic sodas, and fired up split-screen multiplayer shooters from twenty-two years ago. Within twenty minutes, the reality check hit everyone like a ton of bricks. The controls were impossibly clunky, the screen was blurry, having only one thumbstick made moving around feel like steering an old refrigerator, and our eyes were physically straining trying to distinguish pixels on a twenty-inch curved glass screen. My buddy was visibly stressing out, constantly repeating how this was the golden era of social gaming and how modern online lobbies killed true friendship. Look, the hangouts were iconic because we were twelve with zero responsibilities, no rent, and unlimited free time, not because the hardware was superior. Modern gaming with sixty frames per second, comfortable ergonomic controllers, and zero screen-peeking is ten times better. My other friend argued that the forced physical proximity and raw jank had real soul that sterile modern online parties completely lack. We ended up turning it off after forty minutes and just watched television instead, which felt like an unspoken admission of defeat. Nostalgia is great until you actually try to live inside it again.
