My roommates and I have a shared grocery list but they add stuff for me to buy them.
By @maelately · Am I the Villain
We use a whiteboard for groceries and the rule is whoever is going to the store next just buys whatever is on the list and we all split it. But lately my two roommates have been adding personal stuff for themselves when they know I'm the one going.
The full story
so i live with two other girls and to keep things simple we just have a running grocery list on a whiteboard in our kitchen. the system is that we all add communal stuff as we run out (milk, eggs, bread, etc) and then whoever is going to the store next just takes a pic of the list and buys it all. we split the cost of all groceries at the end of the month, its usually pretty even. for the last few weeks though, it feels like they're taking advantage. they know my class schedule is lighter on tuesdays so that's my grocery day. on monday nights, they'll add super specific stuff to the list that only they use. like my one roommate will add her expensive kombucha brand and the other one will add her specific vegan protein bars that cost like $4 a bar. this isn't stuff we all share. its literally just for them. i felt awkward about it at first so i just bought it the first couple of times. but it's adding like $20-30 to the bill that i'm splitting with them, and i'm not using the items. last week i bought the kombucha but 'forgot' the protein bars. my roommate got passive aggressive about it, saying she was really looking forward to them after her workout. i said she could just go get them, and she said the whole point of the list was to save trips. i feel like i'm being turned into a personal shopper and paying for the privilege. but they act like i'm being difficult and breaking the system we all agreed to. am i the villain if i just start ignoring their personal items on the list?

What people are saying
@ameliaa — That is so frustrating! They're totally taking advantage of your kindness. You are not a personal shopper.
@gabekk — excellent business model for them.
@liam — Just make a separate list for communal items and personal items and then they can pay you back for their stuff specifically.
@ashhm — lmao
@tesskk — cooked.
