My (34M) girlfriend (32F) and I went out for her mom’s birthday. It was us, her parents, and her younger sister (24). The agreement was that I'd cover my girlfriend and myself, and her parents would cover the rest as their treat. Her sister has a habit of doing this—she orders with her eyes, not her stomach. She got two appetizers for herself, a huge main course, and a fancy mocktail. She barely touched half of it. When the bill came, her parents were a little surprised by the total. It wasn't a huge deal, but there was a moment of awkward silence. Later, on the way home, my girlfriend brings it up. they told me I should have just offered to pay for her sister’s meal because it was 'the nice thing to do' and would have made her parents' lives easier. I said it was their treat, and her sister is an adult who can order a normal amount of food. they said since I earn more than her parents and her sister (who is still in a low-paying entry-level job), it would have been a small gesture for me to just handle it without being asked. Now she's giving me the silent treatment and says I embarrassed her by being 'stingy' and 'unobservant' in front of her family.
