My dad left me inheritance money, and my husband won't speak to me because I refuse to use it to save his business.
By @avamm · Am I the Villain
they says marriage means everything is 'our' money and I'm letting his dream die. I feel like I'm being guilted into fixing his financial mistakes with the only thing I have left of my father.
The full story
My dad passed away six months ago. He wasn't a rich man by any means, but he saved his entire life and left me about $50k. It's the most money I've ever had, and it feels like a final gift I need to protect. My husband started a custom woodworking business about two years ago. I've been his biggest cheerleader, but the business has been a complete money pit. He's not good at the financial side of things and it's been bleeding money for a while, draining a good chunk of our joint savings. When he found out the exact amount of the inheritance, he immediately saw it as his solution. He presented me with a whole 'business plan' of how he'd use the entire $50k to buy new equipment and run ads, calling it the 'lifeline' that would finally make it all work. I told him no. The thought of pouring my dad's hard-earned money into a business that has only lost money makes me feel sick. I told him I wanted to use it as a down payment on a house, something that would build a future for *us*. He absolutely lost it. He accused me of never believing in him and of spitting on our marriage vows. they said if I really loved him, I'd support him. Now he's sleeping on the couch and has been giving me the silent treatment for days. Am I the villain for wanting to protect my inheritance?
