A few people from my office get lunch together maybe once a week, but now they've made a rule. If you cancel less than 24 hours before, you have to Venmo the group $5.

this is not a joke. we have a group chat for people who wanna grab lunch near the office. it's always been super casual. someone says "sushi tomorrow at 1?" and people just say if they're in or out. but recently a few people have been bailing last minute bc of meetings or whatever. so the self-appointed leader of the group chat just posted a "new rule" in all caps. he said if you confirm you're 'in' for a lunch and then cancel with less than 24 hours notice, you have to pay a $5 "cancellation fee" to the group chat's pot, which will be used for a future "group appetizer." a few people are acting like this is a totally normal and sane thing to do. i think it's completely unhinged behavior. it's a casual lunch not a business meeting. am i crazy or is this the next stage of capitalism.
