We have a group chat for ordering food at work to save on delivery. The guys who organize it just made a rule: if you back out last minute, you owe a $5 fee. I think it's ridiculous.

A few times a week, a bunch of us at my job will do a big group lunch order. Saves money on fees, makes things easier. The two guys who usually place the order got fed up with people saying they were in and then cancelling right before they hit 'purchase'. I get that it's annoying. So they announced a new rule in the chat: if you commit to an order and then back out less than 15 minutes before it's placed, you have to pay a $5 'cancellation fee' that goes into a pot for the next order. I thought it was a joke. It was not a joke. Today I told them I was in for pizza. About ten minutes before they were going to order, my wife called and said she was swinging by my job with leftovers for me. So I hopped in the chat and said never mind, I'm out. A minute later, one of the organizers is messaging me for the $5. I told him to forget it. It's a stupid rule. We're not a restaurant, we're a bunch of guys ordering food. He's saying 'a rule is a rule' and that I'm being disrespectful of his time. I'm not paying it, but now it's weird. It's not about the money, it's the principle of the whole thing.
