I'm not trying to be a 'back in my day' person, but I can't shake this feeling. We've got the World Cup and the Olympics going on, and it's incredible to have every event at our fingertips. But my group chat is just a constant stream of analytics, complaints about VAR, and memes about a player's missed shot from three seconds ago. It feels less like watching a sport and more like consuming content. I grew up in the 90s during the Bulls dynasty. I remember waiting for the newspaper the next morning just to read the box score. I remember collecting Michael Jordan basketball cards and actually being surprised by the stats on the back. For the '96 Olympics, we were glued to the TV for the Magnificent Seven, and we found out they won when the broadcast told us they won, not because a push notification spoiled it. There was a certain purity to it. Your opinion was formed by your own 'eye test,' not influenced by a thousand strangers arguing about 'expected goals' or 'player efficiency rating.' Fandom felt more personal and local. You argued with your friends at school, not with an army of anonymous accounts who have turned being a fan into a full-time job of statistical warfare. Now, every single moment is overanalyzed until it's barely fun anymore. You can't just say 'That player is amazing!' You have to back it up with a spreadsheet of data or someone will call you a casual. I love the access we have now, but I feel like the mystery and the simple joy of the unknown has been stripped away. Am I just being nostalgic or was being a fan genuinely a better experience back then?
