I was trying to explain to my younger coworker what it was like to make a mix for someone you had a crush on. The whole process of picking the perfect songs, getting the order right, and the sheer terror of a buffer underrun error ruining the whole thing.

We have a Gen Z intern in our office, and we were talking about music. I mentioned making mixtapes and then burning CDs, and she looked at me like I had sprouted a second head. I tried to convey the gravitas of the situation. You couldn't just drag and drop a thousand songs. You had a strict 80-minute limit. Every song had to earn its place. The art of the transition from one song to another was paramount. You'd spend hours curating the perfect vibe. Then came the technical part. You'd put a blank CD-R into the massive desktop tower, which would whir and click like a spaceship preparing for liftoff. You'd carefully arrange your playlist in Windows Media Player or Nero Burning ROM. Then you'd hit 'Burn' and just... wait. For what felt like an eternity, you weren't supposed to touch the computer, breathe too hard, or even look at it wrong, lest you cause a 'buffer underrun' and create a useless, silver frisbee. You only had so many blank CDs! It wasn't like a Spotify playlist you can just edit. Once it was burned, it was final. The pressure was immense, especially if it was for a crush. It was a high-stakes art form.
