I think I miss the anxiety of downloading music illegally in the 2000s.

Spotify is amazing, but it's too easy. Nothing will ever match the specific thrill of watching a Limewire download for 'Avril Lavigne - Sk8er Boi.mp3' crawl along for three hours, just to find out it's actually a completely different song or a virus.

The full story

It was a whole ritual. You'd get home from school, log on to the family desktop with the dial-up connection, and open Kazaa or Limewire. The search itself was a gamble. You'd look for a song, and get a thousand results, all with slightly different naming conventions. 'Blink 182-Whats my age again.mp3', 'blink~182 what's my age again (live).wma', 'Blink_182_Whats_My_Age_Again_Official_Video.exe'. You had to pick the one that looked the most legit, based on file size, bitrate if you were fancy, and the number of sources. Then you'd start the download. It would take hours, sometimes days, for a single song. You'd watch the little green bar slowly, painfully fill up. You’d leave it running overnight, praying the connection didn't drop or that your parents didn't need to use the phone. The fear was real. Was this file going to be the anthem of your summer, or was it going to install BonziBuddy and brick the family computer? And after all that, there was the moment of truth. You double-click the file. If you heard the opening riff you were expecting, it was pure bliss. A victory. Then you'd do it all over again, painstakingly curating songs for a mixed CD you could play in your Discman. Each song on that CD felt earned. It had a story. Today, I have every song ever recorded in my pocket for $10 a month. It's objectively better in every measurable way. I can make a playlist in minutes, not weeks. But I can't shake the feeling that something was lost. The effort, the risk, the anticipation... it all made the music feel more valuable. It's a weird thing to be nostalgic for, the inefficiency and danger, but I am.
