The meeting was dragging on. It was one of those classic 'this could have been an email' situations. We were brainstorming ways to improve team morale and efficiency for a high-stakes project. People were throwing out typical corporate ideas like 'synergy workshops' and 'streamlined communication funnels.' I was bored and, in a moment of poor judgment, I made the four-day weekend comment under my breath. It was meant to be a sarcastic aside to my coworker sitting next to me. Unfortunately, my microphone was very much on. My manager, who is new and seems determined to be seen as a 'cool boss,' immediately latched onto it. He announced it to the whole department. Now everyone is talking about the 'official four-day weekend challenge.' I feel like I'm in an episode of The Office. It sounds great, but the project is massive. There's no way we can finish it by Friday without working 16-hour days. People are now coming to my desk to 'strategize' and are treating me like some kind of folk hero, but I can see the burnout coming from a mile away. I feel like I have to go along with it, but I've created a monster.
