Is yelling “you are going into the Gulag” at my cat during an all-hands call a career-limiting move?
By @sagelol · Work
I thought I was on mute during a huge company meeting when my cat started messing with my monitor. I was not.
The full story
My cat has a sixth sense for when I'm on an important call. Today was our quarterly all-hands meeting, so of course, he decided to start methodically batting at the corner of my monitor. I thought I was muted. I was *so sure* I was muted. I leaned away from my mic and whisper-shouted "Winston, I swear to god if you knock that over you are going into the Gulag." The presenter stopped talking. There was just dead silence for a few seconds before my manager sent me a private message that just said "mute." The head of engineering was on the call. I want to crawl into a hole and never come out.
