Auto-skipping cutscenes is the biggest red flag in gaming.

If you're playing a story-driven game for the first time, you should be required to watch the cinematics. My boyfriend always skips them to 'get to the gameplay' and I think it's a psycho move.

The full story

This has become a huge recurring fight between us. We love playing games together, but we have completely opposite philosophies on this. I'm talking about big, narrative-heavy RPGs where the story is the whole point — think Baldur's Gate 3, The Witcher 3, Final Fantasy, etc. I'm here for the plot, the world-building, the character development. He's here to click buttons and make numbers go up. To me, the cutscenes ARE the game. They're the reward for finishing a tough section, they provide the motivation for the next quest, and they're often beautifully animated movies in their own right. Skipping them feels like fast-forwarding through the best parts of a film just to see the credits. It's disrespectful to the developers who spent years crafting the story. His argument is that most game stories are boring and predictable, and the gameplay is the only part that matters. they says he can get the gist of the plot from dialogue boxes and he doesn't need to sit through ten minutes of exposition every time he completes a mission. He literally mashed the escape key through the entire opening of a game we were both excited about. I feel like it's a major sign of impatience and a lack of appreciation for the art form. It's not just a gaming preference, it's a worldview. Am I being dramatic or does he just not get it?
