At what point does saving a parking spot for someone become unacceptable?

By @ellielol · Overreaction

My wife and I went to a crowded concert venue last weekend, and I dropped her off at the entrance to find parking. She found a spot and stood in it to save it for me while I circled around.

The full story

The lot was completely packed. It took me about 10 minutes to loop back to where she was. In that time, another driver tried to pull into the spot she was saving. My wife politely explained she was holding it for me, but the driver got really angry, honked, and made a scene, saying you can't save spots with a person. I arrived as he was yelling at her. I just pulled into the spot, and we went inside, but it felt tense. Is there an unwritten rule here we broke?
