A joke about 'quiet promotions' has now escalated to a formal HR investigation against me.
By @codyok2 · Work
I made a wry comment in a team chat about a coworker taking on tons of extra responsibility without a new title. Now they've filed a complaint saying I'm creating a hostile environment, and my manager is talking about 'disciplinary action'.
The full story
My company loves to talk about 'development opportunities,' which usually just means more work without more pay. There's one person on my team who is a chronic overachiever, constantly volunteering for projects that are way above their pay grade. They're basically doing a senior manager's job for an associate's salary. During a recent team meeting, after this person volunteered for yet another massive project, I sent a message to our private team chat: "The classic 'quiet promotion' in action." A couple people reacted with laughing emojis, and the conversation moved on. I genuinely thought it was harmless, gallows humor that we all understood. Apparently not. A week later, I was pulled into a meeting with my director and an HR representative. The coworker I joked about had filed a formal complaint. they claimed I was 'devaluing their contributions,' 'fomenting dissent,' and 'creating a cynical and hostile work environment.' Now HR is conducting a full investigation. They're interviewing my teammates one by one about the 'incident' and the general 'team culture.' I'm honestly stunned. It was a throwaway joke based on a popular term. Now I’m facing potential disciplinary action and my career at this company could be torpedoed over it. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

@beau — Soft.
@piaish — That's ridiculous, you were just speaking the truth! Don't let them bully you for pointing out a broken system.
@fayey — Was the chat actually private or could the coworker you were talking about see it?
@ellieee — I would start 'enthusiastically' volunteering them for every garbage project I could find.
@austink — I get the feeling there have been other 'jokes' before this one.
