The 'five second rule' used to be a real thing and now people look at you like you're a monster.

I was at a little get together with my daughter and her friends, and I dropped a pretzel on the floor. I picked it right up, blew it off, and popped it in my mouth, and you would have thought I had committed a crime.

The full story

I mean, it was on the floor for maybe a second, tops. It's a pretzel, it's dry. I just picked it up, gave it a little blow, and that was that. Back in my day, that was completely normal. If you dropped something, you had five seconds to rescue it. No one even blinked. Well, my daughter's friends (all in their early 20s) just stared at me. One of them actually gasped. My daughter buried her face in her hands and later told me it was 'so embarrassing' and 'unhygienic.' I tried to explain that floors aren't lava and a little contact with the real world builds character, and they just weren't having it. They started talking about germs and bacteria and how they'd never even think of it. It feels like such a silly thing to get worked up about. It makes me wonder what other simple, common-sense things from my youth are now considered totally out of bounds. It's just a pretzel, for goodness sake.
