I was thinking about this the other day. We get notifications for everything now, and they're all just sterile little pings and buzzes. But that AOL sound? It was an event. You'd come home, log on, hear that dial-up noise, and then you'd wait. Hearing 'You've got mail!' felt like a real person was telling you something important was waiting. It was pure excitement.
