My coworkers are trying to police how we use a thumbs-up emoji in the group chat.

I'm at a summer internship and the main group chat is used for everything. After our manager posted an important update, a few of us just gave it a 👍, and now there's a full-blown debate about whether that's 'professional' enough.

so i'm doing this summer internship and to be honest it's mostly just boring office work, but whatever. we have this group chat for our team that the manager uses to post schedule changes or project updates. it's also where people post memes and plan lunch so the vibe is usually pretty chill. yesterday the manager posted a new deadline for a big project. it was a whole paragraph of info. me and like two other interns just reacted with a thumbs-up emoji (👍) to show we saw it. literally five minutes later this one kid, the super try-hard intern, messages the whole chat and says "hey guys can we all make sure we're replying with 'got it' or 'confirmed' from now on? a thumbs up is ambiguous and doesn't confirm you've actually read it." and i'm just like... are you for real? now half the chat is backing him up saying it's about "clear communication" and "professionalism" and others are saying it's a group chat for an internship, not the pentagon. it's not that deep. now it's just super awkward and my manager is probs annoyed his notifications are blowing up over an emoji. am i crazy or is this the dumbest work drama ever?
