My coworker submitted a formal complaint because I 'disrupted the team's synergy.'
By @jettsorta · Work
The 'disruption' was that I declined a last-minute Friday meeting invitation that was scheduled for 4:45 PM. The meeting had no agenda, was marked 'optional,' and my boss had already approved my time-off request to leave at 4:30 for a doctor's appointment.
The full story
A few weeks ago, I had a specialist appointment that I'd booked months in advance. My boss knew about it and approved my early departure. At around 3 PM on that Friday, a coworker sends a calendar invite for 4:45-5:15 PM titled 'Team Synergy Touchpoint.' It's marked optional and has zero notes in the description. I declined the invitation, adding a brief note: 'Apologies, have a prior commitment I cannot move.' I logged off at 4:30 as planned. This morning, I was pulled into a meeting with my boss and an HR representative. The coworker filed a formal complaint against me. The complaint alleged that my 'blatant disregard for team collaboration' created a 'negative and exclusionary atmosphere' and that my declining the optional meeting was 'a passive-aggressive act that has damaged team morale.' I was asked to explain my actions. I showed them my pre-approved time off and the appointment confirmation. My boss backed me up, but the HR rep said they have to take all complaints seriously and will be 'monitoring the team dynamic.' My coworker hasn't spoken a word to me all day and is now communicating with me only through formal emails, cc'ing our boss on every single one. I feel like I'm losing my mind.
