My boss wants me to pay for a tool I broke at work.

I was using a torque wrench, it was old and slipped, and the bit snapped. Now my shift lead is saying I was careless and that I need to pay for the replacement since they're expensive.

This is nonsense right? The thing was old, everyone knows the tools are old. I'm an auto mechanic. I use these things all day, every day. It's normal for equipment to get worn out and break. That's just a cost of doing business. He's trying to make an example out of me, I guess. He wants me to pay the $250 to replace it. I'm not doing it. It broke during normal use. That's a shop expense, not my personal expense. I don't get paid enough for this.
