I may have destroyed a backpack and our kitchen to prove my boyfriend wrong about a watermelon.
By @wessorta · Too Far
We had a dumb, long-running argument about whether a full-sized watermelon could fit inside a regular school backpack. He was adamant it couldn't be done, and I was committed to proving him wrong.
The full story
This has been our roman empire for weeks. It started at a 4th of July cookout when we saw someone trying to stuff groceries into a bag. My bf (28m) scoffed and said 'some things just don't fit,' and made a weirdly specific comment about how you could never fit a whole watermelon in a backpack. I (26f) immediately disagreed. I was convinced with the right technique, it was possible. So today, I decided to settle it. I went to the store and bought a big, round watermelon and a brand-new, standard-issue Jansport-style backpack. I got home, set up my phone to record for proof, and got to work. At first, I felt so vindicated. It was tight, but the watermelon was slowly disappearing into the bag. I was sweating, the zippers were straining, but I was so close. With one final, heroic shove, I felt a horrible ripping sound. The ENTIRE bottom of the backpack blew out. The watermelon didn't just fall out—it exploded. Watermelon chunks everywhere. Juice on the cabinets. Seeds stuck to the ceiling. It looked like a fruit-based crime scene. Of course, that's the exact moment my boyfriend walked in. He just stared in silence for a full minute and then slowly, dramatically, started clapping. Now I have a huge mess and he says I owe him an apology for 'brutalizing an innocent backpack'. I think it was a worthy sacrifice for science, but maybe I went too far?

@sagey — I'd make him buy me a new backpack AND clean the kitchen since you were right in principle.
@owenliterally — This reminds me of when my husband and I argued if you could cook a lasagna in the dishwasher. You can't.
@laneforsure — lmaoooo
@zaneish — Did you try measuring either the watermelon or the backpack opening first?
