Hot take: a burger is not a sandwich.

By @avakk · Hot Takes

My friends and I have a running debate and it gets surprisingly heated. I am firmly in the 'not a sandwich' camp, but they all think I'm insane.

The full story

This started as a dumb joke but now it's a legitimate point of contention in my friend group. My stance is that a sandwich is defined by its construction: two distinct pieces of bread with fillings in between. A burger bun, while technically two pieces, is a purpose-built vessel for the patty. It's a singular, cohesive unit. You don't call a hot dog a sandwich, right? It's a hot dog. Same logic applies. A burger is a burger. It's in its own category. My friends say anything between two pieces of bread is a sandwich. That's just lazy. By that logic, is a quesadilla a sandwich? Is a taco? It's culinary chaos. I'm not trying to be difficult, but words have to mean something, otherwise we're just living in a world of lies where a hamburger is a 'beef sandwich'. Gross.
